Amy Sherald: American Sublime, will open at the Whitney in Spring 2025, featuring her career highlights, unique portrait style, and depictions of American life.

“Amy Sherald’s captivating piece, “They Call Me Redbone, but I’d Rather Be Strawberry Shortcake,” delves deep into themes of identity and self-perception.

By juxtaposing the playful innocence associated with Strawberry Shortcake and the complex connotations of being labeled as “Redbone,” Sherald invites viewers to reflect on the richness of cultural identity. Through her vibrant use of colour and thought-provoking imagery, she encourages a dialogue about how societal labels can influence one’s sense of self, while simultaneously celebrating the multifaceted nature of individuality. She is wearing a vibrant yellow dress that catches the eye and stands out beautifully against a striking red background.
